ABOUT US
The founder of Kingsmead College, Miss DV Thompson, planned a happy school, and this tradition continues - largely because of the spirit of comradeship between staff and girls and amongst our girls themselves. Situated in beautiful gardens in Melrose, Kingsmead is easily accessible from all areas of Greater Johannesburg. Girls from Grade 000 (Bluebells) to Matric flourish in the nurturing, yet stimulating environment.
Girls are self-motivated to achieve noteworthy academic success. The extensive subject choice allows our girls with varied interests and abilities to develop to their full potential. Small classes reflect the focus on the individual that is fundamental to the Kingsmead ethos. All Learning Areas make use of state-of-the-art, fully-networked IT facilities.
Our teachers are committed to both stretching and encouraging our girls' academic abilities. "Franc ha Leal", our school's motto, encourages the practice of freedom within the restraints of loyalty and responsibility. Through Representative Councils, Cultural Societies and a Social Responsibility Programme, girls develop the leadership qualities that prepare them for successful tertiary education and future careers both locally and overseas. Highly qualified and enthusiastic staff cultivates a love of music, art and drama. Private tuition is offered in a wide variety of musical instruments. Public performance in numerous orchestras, ensembles, jazz band, choirs, plays, debating and public speaking fosters self-confidence and enjoyment. Physical Education is a vital element of the integrated timetable and Kingsmead girls enjoy the challenge of developing their sporting talents using the superb facilities, which include a heated swimming pool with diving well, Astroturf hockey field, gymnasium, tennis, netball and squash courts.
The Coffee Shop provides a friendly, safe venue where the girls meet and enjoy a variety of healthy snacks and light meals. The new Junior Primary classrooms provide the ideal indoor and outdoor learning environment. Aftercare and support teaching is offered to those who need it.
