The ACADEMY OF LIGHT was founded because of an increasing need for a learning program that has a balanced left/right brain usage, that treats the learning area as a democratic space, encouraging tutor/learner interaction, that offers a balanced mind, body and spirit education, that puts the health (mental and physical), happiness and education of the child above all else.
So many children these days feel that they “don’t belong” in traditional schools. They battle with self-esteem issues and often become lonely and isolated. Children are born with a natural ability to learn – like the ability to breathe! All they need is to be shown an interesting, accessible, intelligible world and given the self confidence and the inspiration to play a meaningful role in it! We need to teach our children to be Creative Thinkers and develop curious, enquiring minds that are passionate about learning, constantly exploring new ideas, skills and attitudes. The “knowledge society” is a changing society in which information expands rapidly and circulates continuously around the globe.
We aim to prepare our children for this world by offering professional learning teams, using technology to promote personal learning, basing decisions on studied data and using evolved teaching ideas and learning skills.
THE ACADEMY OF LIGHT offers a distance learning program, in a class of not more than 6 students. Each student has their own laptop in front of them and follows the lesson on-screen. The classroom is a democratic environment with the Tutor encouraging interaction, discussion and debate on the lesson.
At the end of each lesson, each child completes a worksheet on the lesson to ensure they understand the CONCEPT of what has been taught. The worksheet is e-mailed to the USA, where a profile is kept on each student. Regular performance updates will be e-mailed to parents and parents will be able to check the Academy of Light website for up-to-date information on activities and work.
This method offers a wide range of complexity and high-level thinking and also caters to varying learning styles. The new generation of children do not retain information by memorizing it “Parrot Fashion”. Researching information, comparing different points of view, analyzing opinions, respecting and considering opposing opinions are the ways to teach our children to think creatively and “OUTSIDE THE BOX”. This is how children learn to self-reference ie. To make their own choices, follow their own internal intuition and make educated decisions.
Another major problem these days is ADD/ADHD. Teachers in traditional schools are all too happy to treat ADD with medication when there are numerous alternatives that are far more effective! After every hour of learning at our Academy, the children jump on a Rebounder (small round trampoline) for 10 minutes. This not only works every muscle in the body, it also releases heavy metals from the neurons in the brain, enabling them to function better.
Each child will be required to subscribe to the time4learning programe.
The ACADEMY is fully wireless and airconditioned and each room has undercarpet heating ensuring maximum comfort for the learners.
