St Stithians College is a village of small schools, comprising a Junior Preparatory School, Boys' Preparatory School & Boys' College, Girls' Preparatory School & Girls' College. Founded in 1953, this city school set on a 105-hectare estate has retained a country atmosphere and yet remains at the cutting edge of educational thinking in South Africa.
The estate offers superb facilities including woodland, an environmental sanctuary, magnificent sports fields, an aquatics complex (comprising Olympic size pool, water polo pools and diving pool), Astroturf, housing for staff and a beautiful Chapel.
St Stithians College is a Methodist Church School, where boys and girls of all faiths are welcomed and respected. The St Stithians College Chapel is at the core of the campus and there are resident College Chaplains, who minister to the pupils, staff and wider Saints family. Religious Education is taught throughout the grades and the presence of pupils of faiths other than Christianity encourages tolerance of other religions.
At Saints, we believe that education is a lifelong experience and see our role as facilitating the development of the whole child, both in the classroom and beyond its walls, and ensuring that each child has a unique educational experience at Saints.
St Stithians College offers an alternative educational model, the co-ordinate model, which offers pupils the best of both worlds. The co-ordinate model comes from a different set of thinking, i.e. what is best for the child, and means that sharing and separation can take place on the campus. In a nutshell, co-ordination means: single sex schooling, when maturation of girls and boys require it, and mixing, where this would be of benefit. The co-ordinate model addresses gender equity, a key issue of the 21st Century, in an exceptional way. In a co-ordinate model children are able to understand their sexuality with their gender peers and to develop a self-confidence, which allows them to be verbal and participative in a co-educational situation.
The founding vision of a liberal, Christian education has been combined with academic excellence and individual expectations based on international standards to produce an education that is not only richly entrenched in its South African roots, but also sets global standards. Core values and innovative future planning are hallmarks of Saints. A highly professional staff corps strives to give learners the opportunities to explore their strengths; and to instil in all Saints students a sound work ethic, sense of responsibility and compassion, commitment and loyalty.
No child can come to Saints and not know that he or she is part of something special, and that, in the words of the school song: “Here our ship once anchored and here its course was set…”
