The Pretoria East Kip McGrath Education Centre is very conveniently situated in Garsfontein, close to Atterbury Value Mart. We provide extra lessons for learners of all ages in a friendly, caring environment.
Directors Peter and Mem Rudge established the centre in August 2004 on a part-time basis while continuing their careers as a university lecturer in linguistics and an IT consultant respectively. The centre has gone from strength to strength, and we now both work full time in the centre, as well as employing seven other part-time teachers. Although we advertise in some school newsletters, virtually all our growth comes by word of mouth and referrals from schools.
Peter is a life-time educator who has specialised in English at primary, secondary and tertiary levels, including training English teachers (both first and second language). An avid reader with an Honours degree in English plus a Bachelor's degree in Education, he derives immense pleasure from teaching non-readers (aged 5 to 15) to read. Improved proficiency in English leads to better performance in almost every school subject.
Mem studied maths at university, but was soon tempted away from teaching and spent over 30 years in IT, designing and developing computer systems and managing IT staff and projects. Her return to teaching was prompted by a desire to do something positive about the very poor level of maths in South African schools. The Kip McGrath remedial maths programme has proved an ideal vehicle and we have numerous children who have thrived at Kip despite having made little or no progress on other maths tutoring systems.
Peter and Mem have two children, both married to fellow South Africans, one living in the United Kingdom and the other in Stellenbosch, and five little grandchildren. In their spare time they enjoy gardening, visiting game reserves and travelling.
