Manie Weber was born in Cape Town in 1940, and at an early age at secondary school level showed interest in art. As a result his mother took him for art lessons to various art tutors. However, his first “Serious” exposure to art teaching and technique was during school holidays at Jeffreys Bay where he had the privilege of sitting at the proverbial “feet” of a retired German art lecturer, previously from the Berlin School of Art (Technikon), Herr Karl Zeib.
George Enslin, who was a family friend of his parents during their stay in the Elgin/Grabouw district during the late 1940s, as well as Gregiore Boonzaaie, were his role models in the early stages of his art development. Manie is basically a self taught artist and is still learning as a full-time artist with a distinctive style of “Romantic Impressionist” as identified by some critics.
Manie sold his first painting during 1960 at the Schweikerdt Gallery in Pretoria for R300.00. Since that time he has participated in local home “Exhibitions” at Sasolburg and Potchefstroom. Lately his paintings were exhibited at the Henry Taylor Gallery, Hyde Park Gallery, Tugwell Gallery at Hartebeespoortdam, as well as at the Waterfront Gallery, Cape Town.
Manie’s portfolio reflects a wide range of topics (Wildlife, Still Life, Landscapes etc.), and Manie is currently committed to obtaining the highest level as a skilled portrait artist, portraying the character and disposition of the person.
Manie is a full member of the American Portrait Institute, thereby utilising the instructional resources from the John Howard Sanden Studio, a renown portrait artist.
