Sheena Ridley`s oils, pastels and sculptures are of an idiosyncratic style.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I live on a farm in the Klein Karoo at Kykoe, which is part of the Bo-Langkloof, between Uniondale and George. After rejuvenating an old barn and outbuildings, I have opened my studio as the Langkloof Gallery and Sculpture Garden. It is a wonderful space in which to exhibit and to work, and has extra accommodation. My initial feeling for sculpture in a garden setting came from seeing the sculptures in various exhibitions in and around Harare; The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and Chapungu Sculpture Park.
My favorite sculpture is one of serpentine stone by Bernard Matemera, titled “Man Changing into Hippo” National Gallery Zimbabwe. It is a large piece –1.5m of very smooth serpentine with beautiful poise and has a humorous side too. My sculptures are exhibited in the garden and the surrounding veld, creating a wonderful amble with plants and sculptures enhancing one another. Having been a landscaper and nurserywoman, I am delighted to see what plants survive here, and am enjoying finding unusual specimens with which to surround my sculptures.
