ABOUT THE ARTIST
I started freelancing as a calligrapher full-time. It was only at this stage that I became systematic in my approach, my studies in philosophy and logic having imparted the analytical skills I needed. I devoured every book I could find on the subject. Until this stage, my calligraphy had been very naive. In this growth stage I authored a small correspondence course in calligraphy. It was amateurish but the process of teaching taught me more than I had learned in the previous ten years. At the same time, I joined the Cape Calligraphy Teachers Guild and we authored a small teaching manual. I attended workshops presented by well-known calligraphers such as Dick Beasley, Ewan Clayton and Brody Neuenschwander. Other than that, I am self-taught.
I have presented workshops here in the Cape and in Gauteng. Among my clients are some of the top ad agencies and designers in the South Africa and municipalities such as Stellenbosch and the City of Cape Town, for whom I did the Freedom of the City scroll presented to the then President Nelson Mandela. I also occasionally do work for local, British and American publishers such as Tafelberg, Barefoot and Frances Lincoln.
