Food
Lebanese hospitality is expressed by the offering of a variety of foods. The gesture is accepted and reciprocated by indulging.
Mezze - derived from the word "miz" (which means to taste,) is usually served as an array of sumptuous, individually hand prepared starters with contrasting flavours and texture. These delicacies are served buffet style to the centre of the table and eaten with bread or fresh vegetables from the Jaht Ghodra (a platter of fresh seasonal vegetables) a healthier, lighter option.
It is regarded as proper to eat with your hands...tearing a piece of bread or vegetable, either placing it on the desired item and pinching between your fingers or elegantly dipping it-making sure your hands are kept clean.
Main course is then served - either plated or plattered - for guest to share. Smoking of the Argileh (Middle Eastern Hubbly Bubbly) is customary as well as the performance by writhing Belly Dancers, where tipping is a sign of one enjoying ones self!
Dessert is the most important custom accompanied with coffee or mint tea showing that one is satisfied with the hospitality.
