Bassline, founded by Brad Holmes, originally opened in 1994 as a small, live music venue in the bohemian suburb of Melville. It rose to prominence as the ultimate live venue to experience South Africa's finest jazz and Afro-beat, branching out by featuring poetry readings and impromptu funk jam sessions. It was home for all musicians and jazz fans.
In 2003 the original Bassline closed and was resurrected in 2004 in the downtown Newtown Cultural Precinct, with a 1000-capacity concert venue and an intimate 150-seat performing space, both with top-of-the-range sound.
Bassline has become an institution amongst music fans. In its 15 year history Bassline has hosted over 3000 concerts featuring many of Africa’s most famous stars and world music icons as well as most music acts that have emerged in South Africa since the 90s – South African stars such as Vusi Mahlasela, Zim Ngqawana, the late Moses Molelekwa, Paul Hanmer and Jimmy Dludlu, to name a few, started their illustrious careers at Bassline.
Virtually every major South Africa music star has performed on a Bassline stage.
Bassline has grown to become a major concert production house in South Africa organising the massive outdoor Africa Day and New Year’s eve concerts in Johannesburg over a number of years, South Africa’s showcase concerts at MIDEM in Paris in 2010 and United Nations All Africa Millennium Development Goals Song with 8 of Africa’s top international artists; it has also been closely associated with Johannesburg’s Arts Alive festival.
Bassline also provides rehearsal and other facilities for many artists.
In front of The Bassline is a life-size bronze sculpture of legendary songstress Brenda Fassie by artist Angus Taylor.
