A SHORT HISTORY OF KATS
KATS was founded in 1997 as the Belltower Players, performing at the Belltower Cultural Centre as co-affiliates to the Kempton Music and Operetta Society. We piggy backed our first show (a one-act farce) on their production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Trial By Jury”
Founder members were: Ken Leeder, Gys de Beer and Heather Mann. Agatha Ikking and Maureen Croston joined the group shortly after inception. Sadly, today, only Gys and Maureen are left of the original members.
Kats went on to produce several one-act plays between 1997 and 1999, but it soon became evident that music was where our specialities lay. It was not long, before the soiree and Travel Extravaganza was born.
In 2003, it became necessary for KATS to break away from the Belltower Cultural Centre and find our own home, which we subsequently did, in the form of our current venue, 25 kempton Rd, generously donated by the Ekurhuleni Metro.
KATS was fortunate enough to be joined by Moddram soon after acquiring our new premises. Mddram have proved to be an invaluable asset to our stable and serve as KATS’ technical arm, responsible for sound and lighting for all shows as well as maintenance around the hall.
Since occupation, we have done 5 brand new productions in 3 years, two of which won SANCTA (South African National Community Theatre Association) awards.
These included:
Best Musical Production “Cotton Club”
Best Set, Script, Costumes ”The Grinch, The Fridge & The Drummer Boy”
Best Cameo Role in a Musical - Tony Miyambo - “Cotton Club”
Best Singer Male in a Musical - Gys de Beer/Francois Katzke tied - “Cotton Club
Best Singer Female in a Musical - Emily Bratherton - “Cotton Club”
