The Centurion Rugby Club was established as the old Lyttelton Rugby Club in 1972 to accommodate players of the surrounding industrial areas and small businesses as well as residents of this previous suburb of the greater Pretoria City Council. The club became the Verwoerdburg Rugby Club in the late 1970’s after the area obtained its own municipal status and was promulgated as Verwoerdburg City or ‘’Stad’’. With the democratisation of South Africa, the Rugby Club remained relevant with the changing of its name to Centurion Rugby Club even before it was formalised by the City Council. Since 1992 the Club has operated as the Centurion Rugby Club with full affiliation at the Blue Bull Rugby Union (BBRU).
The Club was relocated from its previous premises in the old Lyttelton suburb to the central city CBD of Centurion in West Avenue, adjacent to the world renowned Supersport Park International Cricket stadium. In 2009 the club was hosted in its new state of the art facility due to the erection of the Gautrain that borders our sports fields. The Gautrain’s presence has now become a feature of describing our 1st Team as the ‘’Gautrain Express’’ who is a consistent performer in the BBRU Premier League.
The Club is governed by a very applicable Constitution that is regularly updated with the necessary legal expertise to ensure that the Club remain relevant in the new era of professional sport as well as to involve the business environment to guarantee our sustainability. The Club is managed by an instituted Management Board, consisting of club members and which are elected annually through a democratic process at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Management Board has very clear management accountabilities and responsibilities and publishes its audited and certified financial results as part of its Annual Report. Although we are not a profit driven institution per se, we have very specific budgetary requirements in order to sustain our core business which is ‘’rugby’’. It has been proven that our success on the field is closely correlated with our performance off the field as management team. It is therefore our vision to become, ‘’ a semi-professional amateur rugby club in the BBRU.’’
Huidiglik het ons meer as 220 geregistreerde spelers en het ons sewe ingeskrewe spanne wat aan verskeie ligas deelneem binne die BBRU. Die Klub was ook in die afgelope 5 jaar een van die prominente presteerders in die Assupol Reeks wat n inter-provinsiale klubliga is tussen die voormalige rugby provinsies soos Oos-TYransvaal nou bekend as die Valke, Wes-Transvaal, nou bekend as die Luiperd, die Goue Leeus en Pumas klubs. In die laaste 5 jaar het ons 1ste span in 5 finale gespeel waarvan 2 gewen is. Ons derde en tweede spanne het ook die kompetisie in 2011en 2012 onderskeidelik gewen. In die 2012 Carlton seisoen het ses van die sewe ligas waaraan ons deelgeneem het, die semi-finale van hul onderskeie ligas behaal.
Ons klub spog ook met die grootste jeugrugbyvereniging in die BBRU sowel as in Gauteng. Ons het meer as 300 seuns van uit verskeie omliggende gebiede wat weekliks deur n span van meer as 25 gekwalifiseerde afrigters afgerig word met die focus op die ontwikkeling van vaardighede, maar ook die waardes van sportmangees en gesonde kompetisie. Verdere waardevolle inligting is dat meer as 80% van ons klub se afrigtingspan oud-spelers van die klub is en dan op so n manier verder die klub se kultuur onder ons spelers wil vestig.
Deur doelgerigte bestuur en toegewyde bestuurskorps, lede en spelers is dit die klub se doel om nie net sy posisie as een van die BBRU se volhoubare klubs te behou nie .maar om Centurionklub te vestig as een van die top klubs in die RSA, binne die milieu van semi-professionele rugby.
