Pilates is an intricate system of strength conditioning exercises originally developed by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967). An effective Pilates practice aims to balance skeletal muscle and postural tone through core principles such as awareness, concentration, controlled and efficient movement patterns.
The flowing, yet precise movement of Pilates builds long, lean muscle, developing core abdominal strength that help keep the body in healthy alignment and functionally support the practitioner. Pilates can be intense exercise for athletes. It can also be very healing and gentle rehabilitative exercise for those who have been injured and are now in the safe zone to exercise.
