The Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB) is the oldest non-professional Dance company in Gauteng. The Company is in its 36th year of existence ‐ a record of which to be proud.
It is remarkable that this has been achieved without the benefit of a long term sponsor or benefactor. This continuity has been achieved by the occasional one-off sponsorship, fund raising exercises, ticket sales and hard work by the voluntary teachers, commihee and parents of the dancers.
The operations
The JYB operates as a non-‐profit Dance Company.
Its members are charged a yearly membership fee, which covers hire charges of rehearsal studios and production costs. The Artistic Director, Ballet mistress/repetiteur, teachers & administrative commitee all give of their services and time freely, without remuneration of any kind.
The company is currently about fiHy strong with ages of the dancers ranging from 11 to early twenties. The outreach component is crucial to the ethos of the Johannesburg Youth Ballet. JYB sponsors 15 dancers from under resourced areas, absorbing their fees and raising sponsorship for their weekly transport costs to and from classes and rehearsals and for their dance gear.
The goal of the Johannesburg Youth Ballet is to give young dancers from all socio‐ economic backgrounds an opportunity to develop their art and skills, to work and perform in a professionally run company and to experience the beautiful art of the ballet.
