Company
Starfish is an established swimming school that has been operating for over 12 years in the Midrand area.
Premises
Starfish is situated in Vorna Valley, Midrand. The pool is a decent 12m X 6m in size and enclosed by a large brick building, which is sunny and non-threatening. There is a double step along the entire length of the pool so that the little ones are able to sit and stand along the side of the pool making them feel comfortable in the knowledge that they have a solid footing below them.
The pool temperature is maintained at an average of 31 degrees throughout the year. We believe that water temperature is a very important factor when teaching children to swim. The surrounding room is really warm, just like a greenhouse. This makes winter swimming very comfortable.
The Starfish Way
At Starfish we believe in teaching the correct technique from day one all while having FUN! Ensuring proper teaching of the basic skills such as being comfortable with the face under the water, getting a good ‘feel’ for the water and having the correct body position are essential and will help later on when stokes are taught. We also focus on teaching proper breathing technique from the beginning but with a gentle but firm approach.
We do not support the drown proofing approach and rather preffer the tender loving care in combination with fun and sing song approach. Ensuring that the child is relaxed and streamlined in the water, and does not “fight the water” is very important. If the groundwork is not taught correctly, this makes the learning of strokes difficult when the time comes. The teacher is always in the pool with the child ensuring they feel secure and confident.
