The South African Boerboel Breeders Association (SABBA) is a not-for-profit association of Boerboel breeders, owners and enthusiasts. The Association was established in 1983 to ennoble andpromote the Boerboel as a unique South African dog breed. The Association now has more than 700 members worldwide.
The SABBA Board is represented in each of SA’s 9 provinces, as well as in Europe and North America/Canada, Africa and Australia. These representatives are elected by the members, and they govern the policies and affairs of the Association. This includes: the hosting of more than 50 appraisal days, various regional and national shows and training courses for breeders and appraisers; publishing information to enhance and promote breeding standards; addressing current and relevant issues that affect breeders and the breed; and promoting the public image of the Boerboel.
The Boerboel
The Boerboel is South Africa’s very own dog breed. The history of its origins is complex, and can be traced to ancient times. It may be concluded that genetically the breed developed out of the Bullenbijter - brought to South Africa from Europe by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 - and the Africa dog of the indigenous people. The modern Boerboel is large, impressive and fearless dog.
It is bred for protection, guarding and companionship. Today, the Boerboel is popular worldwide. Dogs are exported to, and bred in the USA, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, Asia and other African countries. Since 1983, with the founding of SABBA on the initiative of Mr Johan de Jager, tremendous progress has been made in furthering the image and standard of the breed.
The breed standard appraisal system is recognised internationally. This unique system requires individual dogs to be physically assessed on their own merit - and not according to pedigree - for registration by SABBA. SABBA pays tribute to all individuals who have contributed to making the Boerboel a true proudly South African legacy.
