Andrew Clarke, DPodM(Manc), FChS(Lond), NHDPSEd(SA), BSc(Hons)(Brighton), qualified as a podiatrist in the UK and worked initially as an assistant in private practice before becoming a hospital clinical lecturer at the Manchester Foot Hospital. He subsequently lectured at the Northern College of Chiropody, now the University of Salford.
In 1977 he took up the post of Senior Lecturer in Podiatry at the Technikon Witwatersrand – now the University of Johannesburg after the podiatry programme began that year with a small group of students. Andrew was instrumental in the development of this, the first podiatry course in Southern Africa and the subsequent development of the Podiatry Department and of the Podiatry profession in South Africa.
In 1978 he was elected to the Professional Board of Podiatry at the South African Medical and Dental Council where he served three terms of 5 years as Chairman.
As part of the academic programme Andrew worked with the students to establish outreach services at the Clinic in Alexandra township , Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, El dorado Park and other outlying areas to deliver podiatry services to disadvantaged communities and was subsequently nominated for the Witwatersrand Technikon Alumni Awards for this work.
As an academic he had always enjoyed the clinical practice aspects of teaching and learning and was involved in clinics at the Johannesburg Academic Hospitals, Alexandra Clinic and the Podiatry Clinic on the University Campus in Doornfontein.
However, in 1995 he decided that private podiatry practice would satisfy his desire for clinical excellence. At the same time he would maintain strong links with the academic community by continuing to teach senior students at Baragwanath Hospital. He has been in full time private practice since 1996, first at the Centre for Diabetes in Houghton, Johannesburg and then in 2001 he established his present practice at the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre where he is accredited by the University of the Witwatersrand.
Andrew's special interests are the analysis and management of the foot problems associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis and the foot and gait problems of children.
On a daily basis he provides treatment for all age groups. Although he spends most of his working week at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre, he also consults at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in the Diabetes Clinic and in Paediatric Rheumatology.
Andrew is an occasional expert contributor on podiatry on Johannesburg radio station Talk Radio 702 and on South African television.
