Pewter has an ancient history as a craftwork material. Worked by the Romans and even before them by Eastern Countries and Europe.
Today Pewter Sheets are used mainly for decorative purposes and are largely used by artists and crafters - selected because of its expressive qualities as a material eminently suited to handwork. The very nature of the material ensures pleasure and satisfaction in its works. The variety and ways in which pewter can be worked by relief modelling lend interest to the craft.
Although pewter is the main material mentioned, the same techniques can be applied to Copper / Brass sheets.
At Pewter Art Academy we teach the technique of pewter sheet relief modelling also called Repoussé.
It should not be confused with the casting of hard pewter for vessels, cutlery etc.
Pewter Relief Modelling is the art of impressing and / or engraving designs onto a thin soft pewter sheet to create 3-dimensional effects. A few basic tools and materials are all you need to master this satisfactory way of expressing creativity.
Pewter Casting is the melt down of hard pewter that gets poured into prepared moulds. A well equipped studio is needed for casting pewter.
