Donald Greig was born in 1959 and educated at Michaelhouse College in Natal, South Africa. In 1982 he completed his diploma at the American Gemological Institute and returned to South Africa to take up position as a Director and Gem & Diamond Buyer for the fourth generation family business, Charles Greig Jewellers.
His love for the African bush and wildlife has always been immense and so began the first of his works, a miniature elephant, which was later cast in silver. Realising his talent for creating sculptures, Donald went on to produce his first bronze, a Malachite Kingfisher.
A year later Donald and his family went to the art enriched city of Florence, Italy where he studied at the Lorenzo de Medici School of Art, gaining both experience and inspiration. It was in this historically rich country that he spent time at some of the world famous foundries, learning the age old processes of bronze casting.
