About US
Psychotherapy, in my view, is the unique and safe space where a client can bring their own understanding of themselves and their world, and the professional therapist can bring their understanding of their world and the learned knowledge of how people behave. Together the client and the therapist can jointly unpack the client’s particular difficulty and create a safe space where this difficulty can be better understood, and in doing so a new perspective gained which hopefully holds the solution or answers to the problem at hand.
I work from a predominantly Narrative approach, meaning that I tend to understand that a person’s perspective of their world has meaning and is expressed in the stories they tell of their lives. Psychotherapy allows a person to tell their unique story in safe and non-judgmental environment. The aim of this story telling is to allow for the client to re-author this story with a different and hopefully better outcome.
I do believe that all our past experiences contribute to the meanings that we make of our world in the present. Past successes and traumas can leave impressions on our self-concept, which we carry from childhood into our adult lives. However, no matter what the past holds, it is how we think, feel and act in the present that is important. The past can be thought of like the dictionary that helps us to interpret the present.
No matter what problem is presented in therapy, be it depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse, relationship problems, career difficulties, or general unhappiness, I believe that humans are equipped with the resilience and sense of survival to cope and overcome these difficulties. Therapy merely facilitates this process and in most cases speeds up healing and recovery.
