Sue qualified in 1985 with a B.Sc.Dietetics degree (Natal University) and Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Dietetics (UP).
Her first years of working experience were in both the Baragwanath and Pretoria Academic Hospitals (7 years in total). This provided invaluable clinical dietetic experience with both “In” (i.e. hospitalized) - and Out-patients with a wide spectrum of illnesses. She was also involved in the training of Student Dietitians for many years.
Thereafter she was employed in Industry (Leppin) for a year, where she developed and marketed nutritional supplements for hospital and Community clinic use.
She has been in private practice since 1993.
Sue has a passion for the profession of dietetics: assisting people in all walks of life to eat better in order that they achieve optimal health within the scope of their specific medical condition. A special interest includes the use of the Glycaemic Index as a tool for the practical day-to-day management of diets providing optimal blood glucose control, with proven health benefits.
Other interests include treatment of food allergies and intolerances; as well as assisting people with colon disorders. She also enjoys treating children with any nutritional problems.
To date – she has 2 practices: one in Northcliff, and the other in Boskruin – both in Randburg. Both of these practices are thriving.
She has also developed and run both diabetic and weight-loss support groups for over 2 years, and has a product that is re-used many times for assisting diabetics and overweight people achieve improved management of their condition and therefore better health, through group therapy.
She also does consultancy work for the food industry – offering advice to food manufacturers, and assisting them with food labeling.
She gives talks to schools and clinics; and has also had experience with the media: radio, television and magazines.
She is also involved in software development and marketing, specifically with dietetic and medical accounting software.
Since 2002, she has served on the Executive Committee for the Association for Dietetics in SA, in the portfolio of Private Practising Dieticians. This has resulted in a lot of close work with the medical schemes, HPCSA, and SA Health Care Professions Alliance; in addition to working with fellow committee members on a variety of projects promoting dietetics in Southern Africa.
The most recent business venture is Dieticians at Work, which is a business that recruits and trains dieticians. This is run together with colleague, Lynne van Zyl. Sue does the training, and runs workshops on private practice management, amongst other topics.
