What is Audiology ?
An audiologist is a qualified healthcare professional that specializes in identifying, diagnosing, treating and monitoring hearing, balance and other related disorders. They are trained to treat as well as prevent hearing damage.
An Audiology exam tests your ability to hear sounds of different loudness (intensity) and pitches (frequency).
How Do We Hear ?
Sound waves from the environment enter the ear through the outer ear, and are sent via the ear canal to the eardrum.
These sound waves hit the eardrum, which causes the 3 small bones in the middle ear (the hammer, anvil and stirrup) to vibrate. These bones (the ossicles) send the vibration to the fluid in the snail-like organ (the cochlea) in the inner ear.
This movement of the fluid causes the microscopic hairs (cilia) in the cochlear to bend. These cilia then send the signal through the auditory nerve to the brain, which is able to interpret, recognise and understand the signal.
