ABOUT US
We are Janeen and Gerrie Hattingh and we live in Cape Town, South Africa. We are currently happily owned by thirteen Newfs.
Our interest in the breed started many years ago, when I visited people who had a landseer coloured bitch called Sasha. I saw this big dog come towards me and I thought I was going to be ripped apart! How wrong I was. All she wanted me to do was to hug her and love her. I was sold, went home, told my husband about this wonderful dog upon which he promptly went to the library and bookshops to get hold of all the reading material he could possibly find in order that we could make a study of the breed enabling us to make a knowledgeable choice when the time came.
The search was on and it was close to three years before we finally found a black bitch called Pasha. She taught us what we still needed to know and in fact is still teaching us!
We decided that we needed a bigger property, so we sold our home in the suburbs and purchased a 4 500 sq m property - just so that the dogs would have space understand!
Then we decided that we needed a different vehicle to enable us to transport the dogs in comfort - we went out and bought a van for this purpose. Next we decided, as South Africa is a hot country and these dogs are heavy coated creatures, that they needed their very own swimming pool. This was built, but instead of having steps, it has been built with a gentle slope into the water.
Since then our numbers have grown. We now have 11 adults, comprising of 1 white and black, 1 brown and 9 black Newfies. The latest addition to our family is Cosack, a brown homebred great grandson of CH and UK CH Merrybear Einar, KUSA National Dog of 1999.
Our dogs and the puppies bred by us are fed the BARF diet based on information in Dr Ian Billinghurst''s books and we prefer owners of dogs bred by us to continue feeding their Charmanté Newfoundlands in this way. In fact, anybody who is interested in feeding their dogs the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food is welcome to contact us for information and assistance.
