The spiralling cost of electricity has necessitated a careful examination of our existing design of domestic hot water geysers. One of the greatest sources of energy wastage in any hot water geyser is overnight standing heat loss. It takes approximately 7,68 kWh and 10,24 kWh respectively to heat 150L and 200L of water by 45°C (15°C to 60°C).
The SANS 151 code for 150L and 200L for fixed electric storage water heaters states that standing heat loss cannot exceed 2,59kWh or 3,02kWh respectively per 24hr period. In order to conform to this requirement most locally manufactured geysers are insulated with a 25mm layer of polyurethane foam.
For the new ECO range of 100L, 150L and 200L geysers the insulation has been increased to 50mm as independent surveys have shown that by doubling the thickness of the geyser insulation (between the inner tank and outer skin) will result in the geyser standing heat losses decreasing by over 20%.
