ABOUT US
The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an inter-governmental organisation which was launched in 2006. It’s mission is to support the effective conservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa. The AWHF was initiated by the African Members States of UNESCO and the African Union, with the aim to develop a strategy to deal with the challenges that many African countries meet in implementing the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
The AWHF strives to complete five missions:
1. Provide support to identify and list African heritage sites on the World Heritage List; 2. Provide support and assistance for the conservation and management of heritage sites in Africa, particularly those already inscribed on the World Heritage List; 3. Rehabilitate sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger; 4. Train heritage experts and site managers as ongoing capacity building; 5. Involve communities in decisions concerning their heritage and ensuring that tangible benefits accrue to them
In order to fulfill this Mission, the AWHF is committed to capacity building. The capacity building programmes focus on training related to the World Heritage nomination process and on conservation and site management. Our funds are accessible to all African countries who are Member States to the World Heritage Convention.
