Our History Spans 100 Years
Much of Modjadji House reputation as a guest house providing excellence and attention to personal detail is owed largely to its personal history beginning 100 years ago as the revered farm of Henrietta and Jan Vermaak, later passing through the generations to finally reach grandson and current owner Henk Van Rooyen.
The Vermaaks named Modjadji House after Queen Modjadji, of the Kingdom of Modjadi in Lebowa.
Many legends are told about the origins of Queen Modjaadji and her magical powers as a Rain Queen have been passed down to the current Rain Queen, Mokobo Modjadji V.
Because of its magnificent vista and location, and the family love of the property, Henk recognised Modjadji House’s potential as an exclusive boutique style guest house.
He gutted and refurbished the farmhouse ensuring it retained its distinct South African ambience and today, Modjadji House is one of a kind sanctuary where one still wakes to the unique sound of birdsong within the chaotic heart of Gauteng.
Exclusive Boutique Guest House
Modjajdi House is designed as a boutique guesthouse with six open plan Suites in the main house and three on the grounds, boasting every comfort and facility including open plan en-suite bathrooms with their own indoor and outdoor showers.
Coming from a family of artists and landscapers, Henk ensured that the interior features original African art and artefacts, and hand woven bedding and that the gaspingly gorgeous three tiered garden is a showpiece for collector wooden carvings, and the oh-so-beautiful Modjadji cycads (Ecephelartos transvenosus) from named after Queen Modjadji.
The people of Modjadji regard the cycad plants as sacred and nowadays apart from Modjadji House - where seedlings were transported to 70 years ago -the cycads are seen only in the protected nature reserve of South Africa’s Northern Province of Lebowa.
