Adolescent and Adults
Adolescent and Adult Therapeutic Services offered by Cindy: 12 year +
I work with a wide variety of difficulties which impacts negatively on an individual’s well-being. Thus I believe in working holistically and in conjunction with other health care professionals to ensure that each client receives the best possible treatment. I approach each client as a unique case as I acknowledge that no two people are the same and therefore no “one size fits all” approach to therapy exists.
I have a preference for working from a cognitive behavioural therapeutic (CBT) paradigm but I also adopt a wide array of therapeutic techniques to optimally benefit each client. CBT is a form of psychotherapy in which the client, together with the therapist, identifies, solves and overcomes their difficulties by changing their patterns of thinking and responses, both behavioural and emotional. Furthermore the therapeutic framework is based on the principle that our thoughts and reactions, both behavioural and emotional, are closely linked. I therefore believe that fostering a change in one dimension consequently causes change in other dimensions.
Both therapeutic and assessment services are available for a wide variety of difficulties; ranging from everyday/social problems to a broad spectrum of clinical or mental health disorders which impact negatively on the individual’s psychological well-being.
Therapy and assessments are available in both English and Afrikaans. Therapy is offered to adolescents aged 12 years onwards, as well as adults, couples and families. Alternatively therapy via Skype can be arranged. Assessments are available for children, adolescents and adults and may be utilised for various purposes. I have a special interest in academic assessments to determine the origin of concentration difficulties (ADHD and ADD). Also available are assessments to determine academic ability; subject or career choices; school readiness assessments; and forensic assessments.
Therapy may address problems and difficulties such as, but not limited to:
- Grief / Bereavement
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Problems that stemmed in childhood
- Traumatic life experiences
- Self-esteem and Self-worth
- Couples counselling
- Pre-marital counselling
- Stress and burnout
- Behavioural concerns
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- ADD and ADHD in both children and adults
Children
Child Therapeutic Services offered by Leandri: 3 – 11 years.
“In a world where everyone seems to be larger and louder than yourself, it is very comforting to have a small, quiet en furry companion.” - Peter Gray
The impact of early experiences on children’s frames of reference has a significant influence on their development. When these experiences are characterized by instability and distress, children show evidence of emotional or behavioural problems. Children are not ‘small adults’ and they do not yet have the vocabulary and skills to work through their problems in the same manner as adults. In order to empower children to work through these difficulties in accordance to their developmental abilities child psychotherapy is indicated.
In dealing with my child clients the emphasis falls on Play Therapy and Teddy Bear Therapy (TBT) as method of intervention. The choice of intervention depends on the presenting problem and parents are involved at all stages of this process. Therapy is available in both English and Afrikaans.
Teddy Bear Therapy for children (aged three to twelve years) is an exciting, relatively new form of therapy that yields rapid and dramatic results within a few sessions. Teddy Bear Therapy incorporates storytelling and play in a therapeutic manner. The significance of Teddy Bear Therapy lies in its potential to ensure change in the child’s interaction as well as the child’s whole family system. Teddy Bear Therapy addresses the child’s difficulty on his/her developmental and emotional level. It focuses on empowering the child to solve his/her own problems and strengthen his/her resources.
Teddy Bear Therapy and Play Therapy has been proven to be effective with children presenting with:
- Being bullied
- Extreme shyness
- Performance anxiety
- Difficulties with friends at school
- Being rejected
- Having difficulty separating from his/her parents
- Difficulties in coping with divorce
- Phobias and fears
- Bed wetting
- Bereavement
- Trauma
- As well as various other difficulties.
